What is Spyware? Protection and Removal of Spyware

Spyware is a particularly malicious form of malware, as it can pose potential threats to your privacy beyond simple viruses or trojans. Spyware infiltrates your computer and steals data from your hard drive, which could include credit card information, passwords, social security numbers, and a whole lot more. This stolen data is then sent to a third party, such as a large tech company such as Apple, Google, or Microsoft.

Once this information is stolen, it can be used in a number of different ways: Identity theft, monetary gain, and phishing scams are just some examples.

Spyware is usually installed onto computers without the knowledge of the user due to several sneaky methods, one of them being bundling spyware with a legitimate download. Spyware is not only able to steal your data, but it can also leave your computer more vulnerable to other forms of malware and viruses by opening up security loopholes.

This type of software has been used in the past for brute force attacks on online banking accounts by recording what you are typing through keyloggers, which is why it is often found in tests to check for keyloggers.

How Can I Protect Myself From Spyware?

In order to protect yourself from malware such as spyware, it is necessary to be aware of how it works and what you can do in order to avoid it. There are a few steps that you can take when downloading files in order to protect yourself from spyware:

–  Ensure the website hosting the file is secure and has HTTPS enabled. If your browser does not say “HTTPS” at the start of the website’s address, it is not secure.

–  Do not open files from suspicious emails or websites that are spammy or contain malware. A fake email with a malicious link could be sent to you by an individual trying to access your account.

–  Only use trusted websites for downloading programs and ensure any pop-up windows are closed before downloading a program. When installing an item, keep pressing the “decline” button until you have reviewed and acknowledged all prompts.

–  Use anti-malware software to protect your computer against any possible damage that spyware could do to hardware or software alike.

Is There Any Way I Can Remove Spyware?

Yes! If you suspect that your computer has spyware, there are ways to remove it. Many anti-malware programs can perform an analysis on your device and repair anything they find in the process. Microsoft is well known for its free MS Security Essentials or Windows Defender.
